FAQ
Are your products all natural?
Our specialist herbal and cosmetic team combine only the highest quality ingredients in our Seashanty Organics range. This means combing certified organic ingredients, highly potent plant-based ingredients and bio-engineered compounds sourced from the east coast of Australia. Seashanty is built on the promise of combining age old coastal wisdom and holistic plant knowledge with modern day science to produce the best, most natural formulas for our skin. Like chocolate, sometimes great things can't just naturally be picked straight from the tree!
Are your products cruelty free?
Do you think we would allow it any other way! Seashanty Organics runs a strict testing programme that has been two years in the running. We have tested on ourselves, friends and family on a variety of skin types to help us formulate exactly what we hoped for - a great rituals range that is safe on children as young as our own (at the time one year old), to our grand parents to you today.
Are your products vegan?
We use bees wax due to the amazing benefits it has to our skin so we are not vegan. All our products that do not have bees wax clearly listed in the ingredients list are in fact Vegan. We choose to make this choice simply off our belief that honey and beeswax can play a great role as healer for our body.
What are the topical benefits of seaweed?
The two compounds we use from our wild harvested seaweed have been clinically tested and are not only used for skin care but to help cancer patients re-grow and nurture new skin cells.
Research on the specialist seaweed we forage has shown a marked effect on ageing related processes. Seaweed can potentially reverse ageing in endothelial stem cells (Lee, 2015) and is known to increase sirtuin levels in cell models (Fitton, 2015). In addition to inhibiting key enzymes associated with human ageing processes, research has demonstrated that seaweed may promote vascular health and stimulate immune responses.
The global disease burden of atopic dermatitis (AD), or eczema, is considerable and there remains an unmet need for effective, non-toxic treatments. In an in vitro 3D model of AD, seaweed significantly altered gene expression (Park, 2021). Genes that were beneficially affected included those typically associated with skin barrier function, wound healing processes and fluid accumulation. The same study also investigated skin microbiome and demonstrated that seaweed significantly inhibited the adhesion of the bacterium Staphylococcus aureus, a known aggravator of AD. The adhesion of the bacterium Cutibacterium acnes, believed to play an important role in the widespread skin condition acne, was also significantly reduced. Importantly, seaweed did not affect the adhesion of Staphylococcus epidermidis – a common bacterium found on healthy skin. seaweed offers promising therapeutic potential for use in topical therapeutic treatments for inflammatory skin conditions.
How is seaweed good for our future?
Our seaweed is collected from two species of brown seaweed, Undaria pinnatifida and Fucus vesiculosus.
Algae is a powerhouse for the climate, sending carbon to the seafloor and deacidifying oceans. In Australia, scientists are just beginning to tap its potential.
Globally, seaweeds are thought to sequester nearly 200 million tonnes of CO2 every year – as much as New York State's annual emissions.
Seaweed is not just great for skin care, but gut health, cardiovascular health, digestive health, it is anti-inflammatory and also used to aid our bodies natural fight against cancer.
