Science of seaweed

Our motivation

Seaweed is a powerhouse for the climate, sending carbon to the seafloor and deacidifying oceans. Kelp are essentially the ocean's equivalent of trees. Absorbing carbon dioxide and nitrogen compounds, helping clean the atmosphere while capturing up to 20 times more carbon per acre than land forests. Couple this with seaweed's enriching and potent skincare qualities and we never looked back.

History

A families love of nature

With advancements in green chemistry we no longer compromise on skincare that benefit us and the world we love. You'd think this is all-new, but the natural healing properties of seaweed has been around for thousands of years.

Over 40,000 years ago humans looked across the shores of Tasmania to see a brown plant - this plant became a water carrier and thus the start of Australia's discovery of seaweed and kelp and it's many beneficial properties. First Nation Australians, Polynesians, Celts and many more have cultivated and used seaweed to aid skin and body health for centuries since.

Today, our lifestyles intertwined with ocean activities leading us to formulate our range of bio-active, high-performance formulas to help nourish our skin from days at sea and give back for future generations. We always fear to sound to "GREEN" but put simply; this is our way of making a small change to our daily lives for better outcomes.

the facts

A win for ocean lovers

While forests have long been considered the best natural defense in the battle against climate change, researchers have found that seaweed is in fact the most effective natural way of absorbing carbon emissions from the atmosphere. Unlike tree planting, seaweed does not require fresh water or fertilizers and grows at a much faster rate than trees, expanding by up to 61cm or two feet a day. (Source: Time Magazine)

Learning and working with scientist Pia Windburg, who has over 25 years of experience researching and growing commercial seaweed in southern NSW. We have formulated our range of skincare to harness the nourishing potential of seaweed and its skincare qualities whilst offering the world a way to introduce seaweed to their day-to-day lives and better help nurture the oceans we love to play.

Seaweed skincare

How seaweed nourishes our skin

We are blessed to work with some of Australia's leading green cosmetic scientists to develop a range of seaweed based skincare that harnesses bio-active seaweed and a range of local coastal Australian ingredients sourced along our coast to work in harminy with one another leading to each Seashanty product you see today.

Scientific studies have shown that high purity, certified organic seaweeds have shown that, at very low inclusion rates, the seaweed extracts improved skin wrinkles in 45% of subjects, were effective at reducing wrinkle visibility in 100% of subjects, and reduced reddening by up to 45% relative to the control group. An expert clinician determined a 60% overall improvement in skin appearance, while 80% of study participants self-reported a visual improvement in skin firmness, tightness and elasticity.

In short, seaweed has a profound effect on Antioxidant Protection, Collagen Production and Skin Barrier Quality. These qualities form the basis of our skincare rituals and once magnified by other coastal ingredients such as Kakadu plum, Aloe Vera, Macadamia Oils and many more offering a highly nourishing skincare range that we are more than proud to be a part of.

A boost for nourished skin

Collagen forms a scaffold that provides strength and structure within the body. It is an essential component of connective tissue and plays a crucial role in holding the body’s cells together. It also gives strength and elasticity to the skin.

In vitro data has also reported that high purity seaweed extracts effectively inhibit collagen production and elastase. Lessening such enzyme activity may assist in the reduction of skin degradation and promote the formation of new skin matrix.

Protecting our skin barrier & preventing inflamed skin

Seaweed contains essential fatty acids that help maintain your skin's barrier. Seaweed is rich in polysaccharides such as alginic acid, which helps to lock moisture into your skin. And when moisture is trapped, your skin can't run dry.

Inflammatory skin conditions such atopic dermatitis (AD), or eczema, plays on the minds of many. As an effective, non-toxic treatment for these widespread conditions recent studies investigating high purity, topical bio-active seaweed extracts suggested that the application of high purity extracts may assist in the prevention and treatment of atopic dermatitis and acne (Park, 2021). In an in vitro 3D model of AD, bio-active seaweed significantly altered gene expression (Park, 2021). Genes that were beneficially affected included those typically associated with skin barrier function, wound healing processes and fluid accumulation.
